Jacob Gould Schurman was the United States Minister to Greece and Montenegro during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), and he also authored this detailed historical account of the conflicts titled The Balkan Wars: 1912-1913.

During his tenure as the U.S. Minister to Greece and Montenegro, Schurman was a diplomat on the scene and observed the events of the wars at close range. This direct observation and interaction with key players provided him with a unique, firsthand perspective on the complex geopolitical dynamics, national viewpoints, and diplomatic maneuvers of the era.

Schurman's book, published in 1916 (with earlier editions as well), is a significant contemporary analysis of the conflicts. In his work, he:
  • Analyzes the causes and consequences of the wars, framing them as critical precursors to World War I.
  • Details the key players, events, and the breakup of the Ottoman Empire in Europe.
  • Explores the interplay of nationalism, imperial interests, and territorial disputes among the Balkan states and major powers like Russia and Austria-Hungary.
  • Sheds light on the diplomatic failures and rivalries that contributed to the first and second Balkan Wars.
Schurman's work is considered an important resource for understanding the historical intricacies of the Balkans and the factors that shaped modern European history.
